November 16, 2018 CHS Football -vs- Guthrie |
Friday night's 35-10 win over Guthrie moves the 2018 (now 12 & 0) Football Cardinals into at least a tie with the 1978 Cardinals (12 & 1) for the most wins ever for a Collinsville varsity football team. More importantly it moves Collinsville into the 5A playoff semi-finals and an opportunity for more wins and possibly a first ever state title. The (9 & 2) Guthrie Bluejays were still "hamging around" after a 7-3 first half. Head Coach Kevin Jones credited the offensive line with "taking over the game" in the second half along with outstanding play by defensive, offensive, and kicking team units. Collinsville's next challenge will be defending state champs and also unbeaten (12 & 0) this year - Carl Albert.
Last week (round one -vs- Ada) heaters were necessary on the sidelines with temps in the twenties. This week was balmy by comparison (in the forties) but The Trap still brought the "heat" with a second Chrstmas theme.
The Collinsville Crimson Cadet Band has not marched half time at either playoff game but provided the National Anthem and entertained from the stands.

Guthrie had the ball first and drove from their own 23 to Collinsville's 31 before the Cardinal defense turned them over on downs at the 35. Starting from there Collinsville gave Guthrie a big dose of Brayden Burd (#22) as he carried the ball ten straight times to cover 65 yards for Collinsville's first touchdown (below) at 3:31 in the first quarter. Seth Weiser kicked the extra point and the score was 7-0.
On Guthrie's second possession they passed (from near mid-field) down to the Collinsville 3 yardline where Walker Roberts apparently took the ball away on the last play of the first quarter. The defensive photo above is from earlier in the Guthrie drive. My view was blocked by Guthrie's bench on the long pass play.
Collinsville started the second quarter (& their 2nd possession) from their own three yard line and Jake Tuttle (#21) in the back field.

Collinsville moved out to their own 36 before the drive stalled and Cale Hutchens punted to Guthrie's 36 with 7:41 left in the 2nd quarter.
Guthrie passed their way down to Collinsville's 15 on their 3rd possession before settling for a field goal with 5:24 in the 2nd quarter. That made the score 7-3.
Malcolm Tillman (#24) had a big gain into Guthrie territory on this play in Collinsville's 3rd possession. Seth Weiser eventually tied a field goal from the 14 that was partially blocked and short at 2:31 in the 2nd quarter.
Guthrie was again moving the ball but Eli Benham (#10) intercepted to stop them with 32 seconds left in the first half.
Collinsville was this close to scoring just before the half with Baylor Haynie (#35) and the Guthrie defender both fighting for this Cole Dugger pass inside the five yard line. Neither came down with the ball with 6 seconds remaining in the first half that ended 7-3.
This was the final play of the first half which was an incomplete pass but I was impressed with two Guthrie defenders "grounded" by the offensive line. -- Ted
Without band or cheer halftime entertainment, The Trap (student section) provided their own entertainment.

The teams traded punts to start the second half but Malcolm Tillman (#24) capped the next Cardinal possession with this 19 yard TD run at 5:17 in the 3rd quarter. The drive also included Dugger passes to Wilson, Haynie and Gregory. Weiser's extra point kick gave Collinsville a 14-3 lead.
Grayson Boomer (#18) avoided this Guthrie defender after catching a Dugger pass and gained 16 yards to Guthrie's 37 near the end of the 3rd quarter.
Jake Tuttle (#21) scored on this 19 yard run at 10:49 in the 4th quarter. Weiser's kick made the score 21-3.
Walker Roberts (#23) picked off a Guthrie pass at Collinsville's 36 at 7:47 in the 4th quarter.
After Roberts' interception Colinsville Malcom Tillman (#24) provided the yardage for the next touchdown. This TD run from the 5 came with 6:06 left in the game and the score reached 28-3 after Weiser's kick.
Guthrie had deadball fouls after both Tillman's TD and Weiser's PAT kick so Collinsville's kickoff came from Guthrie's 30 yardline. Seth Weiser (#6) bounced the kickoff right into the hands of Caleb Mitchell (#28) below.
Caleb Mitchell (#28) took Seth Weiser's "on-side" kickoff on the dead run at the 12 yard line and reached the endzone but was not allowed to advance the kick with Collinsville having the ball at the 12 instead.
It took Collinsville just one play to score after Mitchell's kickoff recovery, with Jake Tuttle (#21) rushing for a 12 yard TD at 5:34 in the 4th. Weiser's extra point kick set the score at 35-3. Guthrie managed to finally reach the endzone with 55 seconds left in the game for the final 35-10 score.
