Mr. Wright,

You have some really cute pictures of my Girl Scouts on your website! The ones featured were quite excited to see themselves on there. I wanted to share with you, however, the extent of their project as it wasn't just about showing the dogs. They earned their 2009 Cookie Pin which had a theme of philanthropy for this year. The girls had to learn what philanthropy is and how they could show it in their community and they, on their own, decided to work with the animal shelter. Additionally, they chose to spend $100 of their cookie money on food for the shelter.

I've seen a lot of articles about Girl Scouts lately and people commenting "what do they do anyway?! They annoy us with cookies and do crafts!". I just wanted to highlight an example of what the cookie money goes to. The girls decide how we use our money and some of it does go to purely fun trips but most everything we do has a purpose of serving the community or allowing the girls to grow in their sympathetic and empathetic thought processes and actions.

We will be having one last "cookie booth" sale next Monday from 10am to 1pm at the Bank of the Lakes in Collinsville. If you happen to stop by and take pictures, could you make some note about them using some of their money earned to directly support the community such as with the food donation to the animal shelter? Please see the attched document I created for the Girl Scout council and girl's family members for the details of their project.

I'm not asking you to change your website or article nor do I expect you to but I'm hoping, in the future, maybe we can convey the depth of their projects a little bit more.
Thank you!

Saturday, March 14th, the girls of Osage Service Unit Troop 2732 earned their 2009 Focus on Philanthropy Cookie Pin. Over the past few weeks, they discovered what philanthropy means, connected by devising a philanthropic community service project together, and took action by working with the Ward-Wiseman Animal Shelter in Collinsville, Oklahoma.

On Saturday, Collinsville Downtown, Inc. sponsored a community get together which included an Antique Road Show style appraisal area, a chili cook-off, and a pet contest. There were multiple pet categories including cutest, smartest, best dressed and most unusual. The Girl Scouts left their own pets at home and took up the leashes of the homeless dogs to get them seen and hopefully adopted.

Shadow is a suspected puppy mill survivor since she is conditioned to not leave her cage and is extremely timid. Chloe and Holly presented her in the contest and she won 3rd place ($15 prize!) in the most unusual category. Additionally, they showed her to and talked to people interested in adopting her.

Tiffy was presented by Mykka and Remy. They showed that she knew some tricks and when they explained that she was a homeless shelter dog they just met rather than a trained pet, the judges were quite impressed indeed! She won 2nd place in the smartest category ($20 prize!).

After the contest, the girls gave the contest winnings to the shelter as well as presenting them with 100 pounds of dog food, 40 pounds of cat food and two large bags of treats they had purchased with some of their cookie money. After the animals were given water, treats and packed up to go back to the shelter and the community dispersed, the girls washed their hands and sat down for a sack lunch. The event coordinator approached them, told them how impressed she was with their efforts, and surprised us all with a $40 donation to the troop to continue their good works! It was a very rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Ted Note: I'm sure there are plenty of other organizations in Collinsville deserving of publicity. If you take the time to gather the information and email it to me, I'd be happy to use it on www.cvilleok.com as time permits.
