CHS Football -vs- OKC Bishop McGuinness
Cardinals Advance Past 5A Playoffs Round 2
The iced over Sallee Field scoreboard was a beautiful sight after the Collinsville Cardinals gambled and won on the 2-point conversion (rather that go for a tie with 1:18 left). The Cardinal defense took care of that final 1:18 to advance Collinsville to the 3rd round of the 5A State Playoffs. The next opponent will be determined Saturday.
In his brief words to the victorious team after their come back win over McGuinness: Coach Kevin Jones said " I've never seen anything like it ... finding a way to get it done ... refusing to lose". And with an assist from Gavin Rose: "Cardinal Magic"...
The freezing weather and icy road conditions contributed to a few empty seats at Sallee Field Friday ... but those that were there made plenty of noise to cheer the Cardinals on to victory. The OKC (visitor) side was pretty sparce as those fans had to brave much worse weather on their end of the turnpike to reach Collinsville. Many other Friday playoff games were postponed to Saturday.
Collinsville had the ball first and marched down to the field reaching the McGuinness 13 yard line on this Keenan Hamilton (#20) pass reception. The Cardinals turned the ball over on downs on 4th and 2 at the 13 with 5:31 left in the first quarter.
After Collinsville failed to score on their first possession, Bishop McGuinness cruised down the field and scored in about 3 plays (the final a 21 yard run above) and after the kick had a 0-7 lead.
The Cardinal offense in the first quarter.
QB Zane McElroy (#4) hit Tyler Forest on a 67 yard TD pass play and after Sergio Perez' kick the Cards had tied the score at 7-7 with 1:15 left in the first quarter.
Cardinal Defense in 2nd quarter.
T.J. Johnson (#6) blocked McGuinness' extra point kick attempt to keep the score at 7-13 following a 12 yard OKC run early in the 2nd quarter (10:56).
Ryan Haymaker (#25) with a nice 2nd quarter gain.
Justin Kothe (#45) stopped the McGuinness QB for a small loss back to the 4 on this play but they scored on the next play (at 5:02 in the 2nd quarter) and ran in a 2-point conversion for a 14-21 score.
The Cardinal offense headed to the sideline during a 2nd quarter timeout.
Keenan Hamilton (#20) was likely a shirt-tail away from Collinsville scoring just before halftime (and after OKC had gone up 14-28). The pass play started at Collinsville's 33 yard line and reached the McGuinness 22 but the ball came out and McGuinness recovered with 31.5 second left in the half.
The band entertained from the stands as they braved the chilling wind from the north.
The Collinsville cheerleaders entertained at halftime with the Cardinals down by 2 touchdowns.
I'm not sure what was said (or adjustments made) but Collinsville came out of halftime and turned the game around. They got the ball at their own 20 and went 80 yards in eight plays to score. This pass play from McElroy to Tyler Forest (#81) covered 21 yards at 8:46 in the 3rd quarter. Sergio Perez kicked the extra point to get the Cards to within a touchdown at 21-28.
The Cardinal defense shut out McGuinness during the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th.
McGuinness intercepted this Cardinal pass at the 16 yard line to prevent Collinsville from scoring on their 2nd possession in the second half (at 5:01 3rd quarter).
T.J. Johnson (#6) got Collinsville down to the 15 with this McElroy pass in the 4th quarter.
Zane McElroy (#4) covered 10 yards to score on this QB keeper at 7:53 in the 4th quarter.
Sergio Perez (#9) booted the extra point to tie the score at 28-28 with 7:53 left in the game.
McGuinness chewed up 75 yards and most of the clock before scoring (28-35) on a 3 yard run with 1:40 left. Ryan Haymaker (#25 above) took the ensuing kickoff out the Cards 25 yard line.
This McElroy pass to Keenan Hamilton (#20 at mid-field) was the two play drive answer to the McGuinness score just seconds before. Hamilton covered 75 yards and put Collinsville within 1 point with 1:18 left in the game.
Instead of going for the safer extra point kick (& tie) Collinsville went for 2 and the win. That gamble paid off big as Zane McElroy (#4) pulled a would-be tackler into the endzone with him to complete the successful two point conversion and put Collinsville ahead 36-35.
Shawn Koscheski (#1) intercepted a McGuinness pass (at Collinsville's 37) with 41 seconds left in the game to seal the Cardinal's trip to a 3rd round playoff game.

Cards trail 14-28 at half ... more later -- Ted 8:15pm Fri

Football Cardinal beat Bishop McGuinness 36-35 to advance in playoffs -- Ted 10pm Friday --[Cards went for 2 (instead of tie) after 75 yard TD pass to Hamilton with 1:18 left on the icy scoreboard]

Things looked a bit dicey when McGuinness took the lead 28-35 with 1:40 left but Collinsville answered on the next play from scrimmage. Collinsville had to first tie at 28-28 at 7:53 in the 4th on a McElroy 10 yard keeper. The Cards scored on the opening possession of the second half to get within 21-28 (21 yard TD pass to Forest).

McElroy scored on a 5 yard run at 6:51 in the 2nd quarter. Forest scored the first Collinsville points on a 67 yard TD pass with 1:15 left in the first quarter. Sergio Perez was successful on each kick attempt. With several other games delayed (including our next opponent Shawnee-vs-Guthrie) Collinsville had all the Tulsa media for the game at Sallee Field Friday.
My photo editor is full of 8th grade basketball photos I didn't complete today before the HS playoff football game so I will try to wrap those up and then get some sleep before diving back into the football photo page. -- Ted 11:30pm Fri

CHS Athletic Director Jim Riley was out about 6pm spreading salt on the icy bleachers. There wasn't a lot of freezing rain here Friday (compared to what OKC got there) and it pretty well had stopped before the 7pm kickoff.
Just about the only warm place here Friday night was the grill for the burgers and franks at the band's concession stand. The temperature was just about 30 degrees during the game.
The fans were bundled up Friday.
Kacee Price (along with Logan Wilt) is the voice of Collinsville Cardinal TV. I would imagine they had a huge audience of Cardinal Fans that watched the internet broadcast rather than brave the elements.

Jackson Due (#57) was one of the Cardinals blocking to get Zane McElroy (behind Due) into the endzone from 3 yards out at the 6:51 mark of the second quarter. Perez's kick gave the Cards a brief 14-13 lead.
With only a few games being played Friday Collinsville had plenty of media attention with cameras there from at least 4 Tulsa TV stations (2, 6, 8, and 23) + the Tulsa World + Collinsville News + cvilleok and others?
CHS Head Coach Kevin Jones made sure the officials knew he did not agree with McGuinness not being flagged for holding on numerous plays when Cardinals defenders were "being tackled" to prevent them from making tackles.
There were many happy Cardinal faces as the final seconds wound off the clock but likely none with as wide a grin as Zane McElroy who directed yet another Cardinal 4th quarter comeback in this amazing season.
Collinsville Will Play Guthrie (at Sapulpa HS) Friday Nov. 29th as one of the final 4 teams still playing in 5A
