CHS Football -vs- Tulsa East Central
Nearly Upset Favored East Central
Previous Coverage:
I can't find a previous varsity football game -vs- East Central in my 2003-2011 cvilleok archives. I do have a 1958 CHS Football Schedule (below) that shows Collinsville traveled to East Central in Oct. 1958. My brother Phil says CHS played EC in 1964 and 1965. Don't know about any other years ... and no time for research.-- Ted 10/17/2012
11/18/2012 Update: Found in the 1960 CHS Yearbook that Collinsville beat East Central 28-0 in 1959. The Cardinals also beat Owasso, Jenks & Union.

It was an eerie type of evening with a dust filled sky following an afternoon of extreme wind gusts which thankfully died down a bit before game time. Those winds had shut down portions of I-35 with blowing dust earlier in the day. The game was played before a sparsely populated East Central home stand but a good sized Collinsville crowd. OU's defensive Coach Mike Stoops was on the EC sidelines before the game started.
Neither band marched at half time but the Collinsville Crimson Cadets entertained in the pre-game spirit line, in the stands and then on the track during the 4th quarter.
Collinsville was in trouble early as East Central moved from their own 42 to Collinsville's 4 yard line (above) in just two plays after the opening kickoff. Collinsville's defense stopped that threat as Shawn Koscheski recoved a fumble in the end zone on the next play.
Collinville scored on a 10 yard Hunter West run to cap an 80 yard drive on their first possession. The drive nearly stalled with 4th & 7 from the 18 but a pass interefence call against East Central put the ball at the 10. Athen Shambrook's extra point kick was good and Collinsville was in the lead at 7-0 with 4:42 left in the 1st quarter.
Collinsville's defense held East Central to a 3 and out on their 2nd possession with a 2 yard loss (above) and a Carter Rasmussen sack (below).
Chace Wilkins (#7) couldn't quite reach this Zane McEloy pass in Collinsville's 2nd possession but Collinsville did reach EC territory and punted down to the 10.
T.J. Johnson (#6) intercepted this East Central pass at their 41 with about 20 seconds left in the first quarter.
Collinsville's 3rd possession of the game (starting with TJ's interception left) reached the East Central 6 yard line (above). But the opportunity to go up by 2 touchdowns stalled with just 1 more yard gained before a missed Shambrook field goal at 7:41 left in the 2nd quarter.
End of 1st Quarter
The halftime score was 7-8 with East Central driving 80 yards (after Collinsville missed field goal) and scoring on 4th and 2 from the 7 with 2:28 left in the 2nd quarter.
Ryan Haymaker (#25) reached East Central's 19 on an end around from the EC 46 on 4th and 3 in Collinsville's first possession of the 2nd half.
T.J. Johnson (#6) capped off the 2nd half opening drive with this Zane McElroy pass from the 15 at 6:33 in the 3rd quarter. Shambrook's kick missed so Collinsville had a 13-8 lead.
Gary Olivier (#32) brought down this East Central runner in the 3rd quarter.
East Central struck quickly (just 2 plays from scrimmage after Collinsville's score) with this 62 yard halfback pass TD at 5:45 in the 3rd quarter. A 2-point pass play had EC back in the lead at 13-16.
Conner Crutchfield (#11) broke several tackles to get from Colinsville's 42 to EC's 44 on the last play of the 3rd quarter. (EC had scored with a minute left for a 13-22 lead.)
T. J. Johnson (#6) hauled in this McElroy pass at the EC 8 yard line to begin the 4th quarter.
Ryan Haymaker had reached the EC 1 foot line before the play above with Matt Rogers (#64) recovering a fumble in the end zone at 9:47 in the 4th quarter. Athen Shambrook's kick got Collinsville back within 2 points at 20-22.
The visiting Collinsville Cardinals had a 26-22 4th quarter lead following this 3 photo sequence.

Upper left:
Collinsville had recoved an onside kick and moved to the 3 yard line in just 4 plays.
Above:
Conner Crutchfield scored the TD.
Left:
A potential 2-point pass to Keenan Hamilton was knocked away by a defender.

East Central scored on this 17 yard TD pass at 4:56 in the 4th quarter to take the lead back. A 2-point pass conversion put the score at 26-30. East Central scored again with just a minute left after Collinsville had gone for a 4th and 5 at their own 33 and failed with 2 minutes remaining.
CHS Coach Kevin Jones told the disappointed CHS Cardinals that they made "just a few too many mistakes" to win against a very good opponent. but were clearly "playing at a higher level" than any time this year.
