This drawing shows expansion plans for the First Baptist Church campus in Downtown Collinsville including removal of former residential houses and added parking lots. Work on the parking lot west of 13th and south of Center is set to begin now following the recent removal of the house on that corner. This drawing was available at the Feb. 20, 2012 City Commission meeting.
"Yellow House" at 13th and Center Is Most Recent Removal
A house that was for many years the parsonage for the Assembly of God Church (Preacher C. H. Miller's house for decades for example) but more recently owned by the adjacent First Baptist Church, was removed this past week. A Baptist Church parking lot will soon be in that location (NW corner of 13th & Center).
The house was already torn down and mostly trucked away by the end of the day March 29th, 2012.
I only have cvilleok.com coverage of the last three houses removed from the now First Baptist Church owned block between 13th-14th & Main-Center. There were several more that were removed many years ago but were still residences (near 14th facing Center) in this 1954 yearbook photo taken from the front steps of the Collinsville Central High School (where the band room is now located at the Middle School). -- Ted Wright
Based on the drawing, there is one more house still slated to be removed for additional parking. That house is on the North East corner of 13th Street and Center (south of the Library) and has been used for church classrooms for several years. It was built in 1917 for Sol Bayouth the same year the Library was built.
The front porch of the remaining house can be seen in this 1962 (band) photo with two house east of it that have also been removed in the past after being purchased by the Baptist Church. The band is approaching 13th and Center (from the east) in this photo with those homes facing south towards Center Street.
This 2010 aerial view show the two blocks (from the east) in relation to the nearby Middle School, Library, Pharmacy & City Hall.
