I just got a call from my daughter Emily that she was headed to Marathon in the Florida Keys where about 100 dolphins were beached. She belongs to a volunteer group on her Univ. of Miami campus that helps with beached animals. -- Ted -- 7:15pm Wed 3/2/05 (Haven't had status from Emily again but TV report this morning says closer to 50 dolphins -- Ted 10am Thurs). Saturday March 5th update from Emily: She was just there overnight Wed/Thursday and back in class later Thursday. She spent about 4 1/2 hours in the water working with just one of about 48 dolphins on a sandbar near 84th Street in Marathon. (There were about 20 others in a nearby channel). Her job was to hold on to that dolphin to make sure it stayed upright and kept breathing. She had to take a boat out to the sand bar and worked in the dark before having to get out of the water to avoid hypothermia. She said she had help part of the time but the dolphin could take her where ever it wanted and she just had to hang on to the dorsal fin. They started in knee deep water but it got deeper as they moved them.
Some Yahoo News about the Dolphins
Sad Update from Emily 3/14/2005 says only about 20 of the almost 70 dolphins are still alive less than 2 weeks after the mass stranding. The exact cause is still not known but theories abound. -- Ted
