Soon-to-be Collinsville HS graduate Levi Draper represented Collinsville well in his final "high school" football game Saturday playing linebacker and covering kicks for the West in the Army All-American game.
Levi Draper (#10) recovered a muffed punt in the 2nd quarter giving the West a scoring opportunity while the game was still scoreless. Levi started and played most of the defensive and kicking plays in the nationally televised bowl game. The East won the game 27-17.
Levi Draper barely missed a tackle for a big loss on this East trick play but rushed the pass attempt by the quarterback.
Collinsville Coach Kevin Jones joined Levi for some of the pre-game activities in San Antonio. And lots of fans/family below in this photo borrowed from Facebook.
Mini Editorial: Levi's Collinsville and OU fans were lucky he was a starter and got his name "called" with the fumble recovery. But I feel for the many other parents and fans of the other players who were not even mentioned on the nationally broadcast game Saturday. It would seem not too difficult to organize at least few seconds per player to be sure everyone had their accomplishment of being selected for the game acknowledged on air with a graphic or short video. I have no problem that they chose to focus their attention on just a few for the "dramatic" college selections but it shouldn't be to the exclusion of others.
On a related topic, I'm always amazed that bands in the Rose Bowl Parade are only shown briefly or covered by commercials. Broken Arrow parents apparently begged via Twitter to get just a few seconds of their kids shown. And college bands in general are not shown so that we "can" watch commentators and commercials instead. -- Just a few of my many per peeves.
And I understand I often neglect non-starters and non-"ball carriers" in my typical cvilleok coverage. But I do try to have team photos and roster to document their contribution and participation. And I have attempted with my annual senior pages (2004-2017) to have a photo page for every Collinsville graduate. It has become a massive effort which I will not be attempting for 2018 and beyond - sorry! -- Ted Wright -- Jan. 8, 2017
