First Newspaper Printed Locally In 3 Decades
While I was celebrating putting news about Collinsville online (on cvilleok) for 15 years Tuesday, Bill Johnston was renewing an old tradition as he printed this week's issue of the Collinsville Times Star newspaper in his Collinsville office. As far as I know this was the first newspaper actually printed in Collinsville in over three decades. I don't know the exact date, but am guestimating my Dad (John Wright) stopped printing The Collinsville News locally in about 1986. Newspapers after that date were printed on presses in other communities and brought back to town for distribution. Bill's laser printer is much more modern than the presses I was famillar with and have samples of in the newspaper museum. The print quality is amazing. If you are not already a subscriber, stop by and purchase a copy Thursday, you will be impressed! The very first newspaper was printed in Collinsville on May 11, 1899 by W. L. Wright. -- Ted Wright 3/20/2018

John Wright (center) checking the print quality as issues of "The Collinsville News" roll off the large offset press (at 1108 W. Main in Collinsville) in the mid-1980's. The Wright family printed newspapers weekly on presses in Collinsville from May 11, 1899 to Feb. 12, 1986. The Wright newspaper was printed remotely in Nowata for about a year before it was sold in Feb. 1987 to Retherford Publications.

Four generations of the Wright family helped produce and print the newspaper in Collinsville. Founder of "The Collinsville News", W.L. Wright (left) with the only known photo of the Washington Hand Press used from 1899 to ~1905. The right photo shows the Walter Scott Press which printed the paper for about 45 years by multiple generation of the family.
The Walter Scott Press was replaced by the Miehle press which took up a big portion of the back building of the News Office with it's attached/automated feeder and folder in the 1960s. Both (letterpress) presses were operated by George Armstrong in both photos above,
There have been other newspapers in Collinsville through the years. I don't know how long this school paper was printed at the high school? -- Ted
