I have received the names of this year's recipients for this year's Awards of Excellence. Darlene Dunn and I met with the students and the HS counselor, Erica Davis, this morning in the library at the high school. These students will be honored for their hard academic work on May 6 at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation of plaques at the Awards of Excellence Banquet in the high school commons area. Anyone interested in attending can contact Ron Evans at 371-7810. The students are selling tickets as well.

`The following is a list of those students and their areas of expertise:

Kayla DeLeon---Foreign Language

Baylee Rae---Science

Marissa Boggs---Vocal Music

Sarah Shiever---Mathematics

Alyson Byers---English

Assistant Superintendent, Lance West, will be making the opening remarks, the Nifty Fifties Alumni Association will present the program and plaques, and Superintendent of Schools, Terry Due, will make the closing remarks.

All funds taken in at this banquet will go into the Nifty Fifties Scholarship Fund and two (2) $1000 scholarships will be awarded to two Seniors at the Senior Awards Assembly in May. The organization is making its 14th presentation of awards and has given over $43,000 in scholarship money since 2002. Any donations will be appreciated. Check should be made out to the Nifty Fifties Alumni Association.

Spelling Bee -- Wilson Elementary
Wilson Elementary hosted its annual Spelling Bee with our 1st and 2nd grade students on April 10th. We had a multitude of excellent spellers representing each class with their spelling skills! Each grade level had its own contest, with four top spellers representing each classroom. These four top spellers were chosen from each room after individual classroom spelling bees. The students studied hard before the contest. During the competition, they did their very best at spelling words that got increasingly more difficult after each round. After several "grueling" rounds of spelling, three top winners were awarded in the first and second grades. First grade spelling bee winners were: 3rd place - Zaydon Johnson, 2nd place - Brindy Tijerin, and 1st place - Tag Goodrich. Second grade spelling bee winners were: 3rd place - Lily Glover, 2nd place - Janae Mangan, and 1st place - Leah Rule. We are very proud of all of their accomplishments. -- Lee Ann Due 4/22/2014

Herald Elementary Aides Encouraging Students

Our wonderful Aides (outside every day in the car loop) have been dressing up every day for testing to encourage the students to have a positive attitude. Today they dressed up like Rock Stars, complete with guitars and posters telling the students to Rock the Test! Every day it has been a different theme and they do this all on their own because they love their job! They are on duty every morning at 8:00 in the Car Loop.

Wednesday, the costume theme is going to be "Crush the Test.

Thanks,
