October 22, 2013 Fire Station Is "Safe Place" |
Ashley Walker (Safe Place Coordinator) and Russell Young (Collinsville Fire Chief) held the new "Safe Place" sign in front of several Collinsville fire fighters Monday October 21, 2013. The sign designates the Collinsville Fire Station (next to City Hall at 12th & Main) as a safe place for troubled teens to seek assistance from Youth Services (a Tulsa based organization) that will send a volunteer to that location to help the teen. The service is for teens 12 to 17 years of age (or 18 if still in school). According to their web site there are over 280 "Safe Places" in the Tulsa Metro area. Fire stations, libraries, transit buses, QuikTrip Stores, are examples listed there. Also according to their web site, nearly 2.8 Million youth (1 in 5) will run away this year with major family conflict a common reason for runaways. |

Who
needs a Safe Place? Youth in any type of crisis or who feel at risk should find a Safe Place. How does Safe
Place work? A trained employee will ask a Youth Services (YST) volunteer to assist you. The employee will also provide a safe environment until a YST volunteer arrives. The volunteer will wait with you until a parent or guardian arrives, transport you to the YST shelter, or take other appropriate action. |
