Cherokee Nation Photo IDs
Coming to Claremore
On Thursday, January 24, from 5pm to 8pm, Cherokee Nation staff will be at the Claremore High School cafeteria located near the north entrance at 201 East Stuart Roosa to provide photo IDs for Cherokee Nation citizens.

CDIB and citizenship must be established before a Photo ID may be requested. The first photo ID is free. Additional photo IDs will be $5 each as you request replacements or an updated photo.

Bring your CDIB, Tribal citizenship card (Blue Card) or a state issued photo ID to apply for a Tribal photo ID.

Children 12 and younger can get a new photo ID but must have a parent or legal guardian present to sign the card.

Volunteers are being organized by Tulsa and Rogers County District 5 Tribal Councilmembers Buel Anglen, Lee Keener and Cara Cowan Watts to assist the mobile photo ID team coming from Tahlequah.

Your District 5 team is providing light refreshments and will be present throughout the event to answer questions.

If you have questions, issues or concerns about the Cherokee Nation government, please email cara@caracowan.com, buelanglen@sbcglobal.net and lee-keener@cherokee.org.

To contact the Tribe, call (918) 453-5000. The operator will connect you with the appropriate department. Tribal programs and services are administered by the Chief's staff at the Tribal Complex. Tribal hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You may save a trip to Tahlequah by using the Tribes Internet tools at www.cherokee.org. Almost all applications are available online to print from home.

For more information concerning Tribal citizenship, contact the Cherokee Nation registration department at 918-458-6980 or

Additional Scholarship Hints: Part 1

Week of January 13, 2013

On Saturday, January 12, we had more than 250 students, parents and grandparents gather at the Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore for our Annual Scholarship Workshop hosted by your District 5 Councilmembers Buel Anglen, Lee Keener and me.

A big WADO (thank you) to the Will Rogers Memorial, Cherokee Nation Foundation and Bacone College for partnering with us to provide the facility, volunteers, booths and refreshments.

Additional action items to remind folks who did not attend on how to be successful in applying for scholarships and getting the money are briefly outlined, below.

The scholarship search and application process is a team effort where parents are in a support role as editors and mentors. The students must do the work or you will lose scholarship money.

Parents complete the FAFSA by January 1 of the student’s Senior year of high school and possibly each year the student is in school until age 23.

Do not be scammed! The FAFSA and scholarship process is free. Typically, only colleges have application fees.

Create or compile a scrapbook of every award certificate, accomplishment and science fair ribbon, etc. for your running resume and scholarship applications in order to create a comprehensive resume.

Write a running or long resume which may easily be tailored to a one-page resume to match a specific opportunity.

Write a solid one-page resume for general use when not tailoring to an opportunity.

If your resume is not solid enough on content to get the money, identify your areas of need. Then join, attend and participate in new organizations available to you such as the Rogers County Cherokee Association, Tulsa Cherokee Community Organization or Victory Cherokee Organization of Collinsville.

See you January 24th from 5pm to 8pm at the Claremore High School cafeteria for Cherokee Nation citizen photo IDs being made on-site.

If you have questions, issues or concerns about the Cherokee Nation government, please email me at cara@caracowan.com or write me at P.O. Box 2922, Claremore, OK 74018. For daily news and event notices, ask to be added to my District 5 email listserv. You can, also, find me on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Buel Anglen is at buelanglen@sbcglobal.net and Lee Keener is at lee-keener@cherokee.org.

To contact the Tribe, call (918) 453-5000. The operator will connect you with the appropriate department. Tribal programs and services are administered by the Chief's staff at the Tribal Complex. Tribal hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Save a trip to Tahlequah by using the Tribes Internet tools at www.cherokee.org. Almost all applications are available online to print from home.

Cara Cowan Watts, is an elected Tribal legislator of District 5 within the Cherokee Nation for Rogers and Tulsa Counties.

Collinsville Glazed Over Saturday/Sunday
A thin coat of ice from Saturday evening (Jan. 12, 2013) remained Sunday morning when this photo was taken. Sunday is sunny and the ice appears to be burnt off most (non-shaded) roadway surfaces. We've had some rain the past few days and were fortunate that the temperatures let most of that much needed mosture fall as liquid. I still have not "declared" my "first" snow of this winter (worthy of a photo page) despite a few trace snows and sleets. -- Ted -- Sunday January 13th
