######OHP URGES DRIVERS TO USE CAUTION
AS CHILDREN RETURN TO SCHOOL##############
(Oklahoma
City, OK.)
August 14th, 2013
School is
back in session and Oklahoma kids are participating in many
activities which have them running everywhere. Officials with
the
Department of Public Safety want to remind motorists to use extreme
caution
when driving, especially in and around school zones and residential
areas.
AAA and the
Oklahoma Highway Patrol will team up to host a news conference
regarding back to school safety. This event will be held at Troop
B
headquarters located at 9191 E. Skelly Drive in Tulsa. The conference
will
begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 16th.
Please
use the following safety tips when speaking to children about
pedestrian safety:
-Always use cross walks when available.
-Never walk in the roadway after dark.
-Wear bright colored clothing.
-Use the "buddy system" when walking to and from school.
-NEVER play or walk directly behind vehicles.
-Stay alert to inattentive drivers.
-Always use sidewalks when available.
In addition,
troopers wish to remind motorists to be aware of pedestrians
and reduce speeds in school zones, especially during morning and
lunch time
travels. State law requires drivers to stop for school buses loading
and
unloading. Always use caution when backing your vehicle from a
parked
position. Small children can quickly move behind vehicles and
become
difficult to see for the driver.
