We had a great weekend for Smithsonian programs: |
June 22 - William Winchester spoke to a group of 26 from 2-3ish then several more came in before 4:00.. a total of 35 we filled the tour on July 29 and have now set another one for September 16 2:00-4:00..to tour A Very Small Farm.
June 23 - Susan Wessley spoke to a group of 27 on the topic of Cooking on a Wagon Train supplies and equipment, when they cooked, how prepared for the evening, cows and chickens that went along for the trip and much more. She had samples of some of the food that the pioneer women would have cooked for their families. It was a fun class.
June 24 - The Home Representative Club held a fantastic apron style show for the community. We had over a hundred aprons displayed on clothes lines and attached with clothes pins around the meeting room of City Hall, at least 50 aprons modeled and commented on by MC Rick Brinkley, refreshments of tea punch and cookies, and much laughter. It reminded me of a Sunday afternoon gathering of a community like we used to have in our home towns. We had approximately 200 in attendance.
The exhibit was open for all of these events so the attendees could visit Key Ingredients. Our exhibit room was full for all three events. We have had a steady flow of visitors all week. I will get the figures on that for you next week.
It was as a great weekend in the neighborhood! Thank you to all of you who are serving on our Smithsonian Committee you have worked so diligently to make all of these events a success. It takes a community to highlight a Smithsonian event!

Collinsville resident
William Winchester discussed his book and "small farm" with
an interested group at the Collinsville Libraray Friday June 22nd. Winchester
(a CHS 1976 grad) built a home (with his Dad's help) and started his farm
in 1980 after graduating from Tulsa University with a Biology degree.
His "learn by doing" and trial and error expeniences were journaled
daily and an article requested by a publisher eventually expaned into
a book in 1992: "A very Small Farm". Winchester's simple but very busy life includes raising the majority of his own food (going to the grocery store only "about twice a year"). He milks his cow twice a day, tends to his bee hives, cans food, occasionally substitute teaches at the Collinsville Middle school, and does some mowing/brushogging with his tractor. His popular honey is his main "cash crop". He indicated he had tried various other livestock but found that sticking with one cow and chickens kept vet bills and other expenses to a minimum. William says he does not watch television but does consider electricy "a real blessing". He is fortunate to have a good water well. When asked if there would be a followup book about his farm / simple life, he indicated he was too busy now but didn't rule it out for the future. -- Ted Wright |

Wagon Train Cooking |
Susan Wessley spoke (at the Library Saturday) on the challenges of cooking on a wagon train for early travelers heading west across the United States in the mid 1800s. Many that started with stoves in their wagons would abandon them along the way to save weight and space in the wagon for trips that often took months. The small kettles and pots with a frame (as above) proved most effective for cooking after the wagons stopped traveling each evening.. |
Aprons From Collinsville's Past & Present Displayed |
These ladies were checking out the details in the many aprons displayed at City Hall Sunday by the Home Representatives Club in conjunction with the Library's Smithsonian event. |
Rusti Howard and daughter Brinkley modeled matching aprons while (brother and uncle) Senator Rick Brinkley read the HRC provided information for each apron. |
Emcee (Senator) Rick Brinkley kept Alberta Bonebrake (and others) laughing with his comments. |
Marsha Nachtigall demonstrated an apron that converted to a bonnet. |
These young ladies made their own aprons for the show Sunday. |
