On Friday, April
13th, a group of Middle School students went to the 2012 Tulsa Engineering
Challenge. This was the second year a group of students from Collinsville
attended. The Challenge was at the Tulsa Technology Center at the Riverside
Campus. The challenge is offered to encourage students to go into engineering
careers. Many businesses and schools sponsor exhibits at the challenge
to offer information about their specific organization. There are many
hands on activities for the students to watch and participate in to pique
their interest in engineering. The students from Collinsville Middle School that attended were: James Stellfox, William Reynolds, Ross Rigdon, Kristen Elmore, Spencer Beeson, Brett Oliver, Loren Falling, Matthew Downing, Allie Dale and Nick Stavros. The Collinsville Indian Education Department sponsored this activity. All of the Collinsville students were required to take a Mini Math Test, Academic Olympiad test, build a boat from aluminum foil (to catch dropping pennies) and team up for a surprise engineering challenge. This years surprise engineering challenge was an egg drop. The students had to construct a container that would protect an egg when dropped. Other categories that our students entered were: rubber band powered vehicle, ping pong ball launcher, and paper airplane distance and duration. All the students had a great time learning about engineering and engineering fields they could enter into. Julie Reynolds |
