High School Artists Awarded RSU Scholarships

Several area high school students received scholarships to attend Rogers State University in the fall after selection to the top tier of the annual RSU Emerging High School Artists Competition and Exhibition.

Each year, RSU conducts a competition to locate the best high school art students in northeast Oklahoma. Students who place in the juried exhibition receive scholarships to enroll in RSU’s art program.

The students’ art is will be on display in the university’s art gallery, located in Baird Hall, through Friday, March 11. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Placing first in the overall portfolio division was Hunter Nelson of Catoosa High School and placing second in that division was Keli Boyd of Collinsville High School.

In the drawing category, Hunter Nelson placed first, Chelsey Becker of Claremore High School placed second and Hannah Cook of Claremore High School was selected for third place.

In the painting category, Shelby Kidwell of Claremore High School placed first and Holly Tober of Oologah-Talala High School placed second.

Jayce Crowder Wrestling Update
Just thought I would update the Nifty Fifties on Jayce Crowder:
He wrestles for Marion Military Institute in Marion Alabama where he is on an Army ROTC scholarship and in the Alabama National Guard. Even though Jayce is at a Jr. College they are part of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, which includes all classes from Division 1 schools down. As a Freshman, Jayce has compiled a 15 win 12 loss record. He is in the 165 lbs weight class and is ranked 15th in the Country in the NCWA standings. He has also wrestled at 174 and 184 this season. In January the MMI team had a 5th place finish at the NCWA National Dual tournament held in Dalton, GA where they were the defending National Champions from the previous year and were the 1st Junior College to ever win the National Duals. Recently in early February he finished 1st at the Georgia Open held at the University of Georgia and his team finished 1st in the team standings. On the 26th of Feb he had a 3rd place finish at the NCWA’s SEC Conference Championship in Jacksonville, FL, with his only loss coming to the #1 seed from the University of Central Florida, who is also ranked #2 nationally at 165lbs, in the semi finals 2-0. The MMI team also finished 2nd in the team standings at Conference. By finishing 3rd at Conference Jayce qualified for the NCWA National Championships to be held in Macon, GA this week, March 9th thru the 12th.

Hannah's Helping Hands, Inc. — Our Mission
We are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization providing financial assistance to families with children battling cancer. Many families need help with the most basic needs for their families during this fight for their child’s life. Some must leave work for months and even years to care for their sick child and the financial loss can be devastating. Our goal is to help as many families being treated locally as possible. We help with basic needs such as gas & food cards, groceries, wigs, utility payments, prescriptions, medical co-payments, rent/housing as well as other expenses. Our referrals come from doctors, nurses and staff at a local children’s hospital in Tulsa as well as our local communities.
