International Learning Styles Conference
Eileen Richardson provided the photos and text here for a conference attended by several Collinsville teacher last week. The international conference was held for the first time in the United States this year and the Collinsville Education Foundation provided grants to allow the Collinsville folks to attend. The "Dr. Wilson" referenced below is our own Linda (Henshall), a CHS grad, who coordinated the conference held at NSU in Broken Arrow. -- Ted Wright

The names of who attended are: Laurie Koopman, Amy West from Harold; Eileen Richardson, Lesa Lafferty and Dee Fuller from Wilson; Taylor Wheeler and Debbie Tomblinson from the Middle School and Stephanie Harp from ECC.

We learned some excellent information about how you can target students individual needs on how they learn new material. Some very simple ways to arrange your classroom, for example: lighting, and areas with soft chairs or space on the floor for those students who like to learn in an informal setting. Berryhill Schools were well represented and we got some great information on how to incorporate this school-wide. Berryhill has never had problems with test scores. They have had learning styles in place for over ten years and their test scores have always been high.

The initial start up is costly because you have to test the students the first year. Each test is $3.00 per child. (start in the 3rd grade) Then after that you only test new students who come in because the test results are put in the students CUM file for the each teacher to see throughout their education.
We thought about maybe having a feature in the paper every week on a different classroom and what they are doing to incorporate the learning styles.

We met people from Japan, Sweden, Canada, Alaska, Philippines and Denmark. It wasn't a real large group that attended. There were some local schools represented but Collinsville had the most. Owasso, TPS and Berryhill were the only schools that I knew of, Dr. Wilson may have better information.

We had a wonderful time, thank you so much for the opportunity. Dr. Wilson could not say enough wonderful things about you and the education foundation for paying for us.

Let me know what other info you need to write a good story. I think public awareness is important in implementing something like this.

These flowers next to City Hall seem to be surviving OK in the record heat this summer but many yards and farms are not fairing so well. I saw Louis Keith on the TV Channel 6 News last night (July 27th) reporting on the sad shape of the hay crop this year and the resulting sell off of cattle. Much of the United States is stuck in the same weather pattern this summer with 1936 and 1980 heat/drought records being challenged almost daily with 100+ temperatures. -- Ted
