Patchwork Quilters September Meeting
A full house of Collinsville Patchworkers met the evening of Sept. 14, 2010, and welcomed home a favorite member - Ann Cooper from Tennessee. In Collinsville for a family visit, Ann shared her stack of beautiful quilts with other members, and in return, local members also displayed their handiwork . Marie Gillespie presented an update on the VFW quilt (currently displayed at Bank of the Lakes), and noted that a winning ticket will be drawn during the Sept. 30 Taste of Collinsville festivities. Proceeds from the quilt will be directed to the VFW Roof Fund. Janice Coke gave a program on decorative threads, plus ideas for quilt storage. The evening ended with cookies and punch, as members gathered around Ann to catch up on the news before she headed back to Tennessee.

Nationally Known Health Speaker At City Hall Sept 29th -- Mark Fenton
The City of Collinsville in partnership with Cherokee Nation will be hosting Mark Fenton on September 29th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Collinsville Commission Chambers. Mark Fenton is an independent public health, planning, and transportation consultant with an engineering background, as well as an author, contributing editor for Health magazine, and former PBS television host. Mark Fenton was the host of the PBS television series “America’s Walking,” a consultant to the University of North Carolina’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, and an instructor in the walkable community workshop series of the Washington DC-based National Center for Bicycling and Walking. He’s a contributing editor to Health magazine and has written numerous books, including “The Complete Guide to Walking for Health, Weight Loss, and Fitness” (Lyons Press, 2008) and “Predometer Walking” (Lyons Press, 2006). He is an entertaining, persuasive, and knowledgeable walking advocate, and one of the nation’s foremost experts on its favorite exercise. The former editor-at-large of Walking Magazine is also a champion walker: From 1986 to 1990 Mark was a member of the US national race walking team five times, he represented the US in several international competitions, and he coached the US team at the 1995 World Championships in Beijing. In addition, while training for the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Trials in the 50-kilometer (31-mile) race-walk he studied biomechanics and exercise physiology at the Olympic Training Center Sports Science Laboratory in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Mr. Fenton will discuss one of our greatest current public health concerns—the rise of sedentary lifestyles and their associated afflictions—to another topic of great current interest: the creation of more livable communities. The breadth of the topic is amazing, and can include: current health and fitness recommendations; the benefits of a healthier work force; cost-effective, long-term activity promotion; modern development; suburban sprawl; the call for more sustainable communities; the need for responsible environmental stewardship and preservation of open space; the development of trails and greenways. The forum is open to the public and we encourage everyone to attend.
