Uniform Adult Guardianship Law
Passed In Oklahoma

For Immediate Release -- May 13, 2010

Senate Bill 2204, the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act (UAGPPJA), was signed into law by Governor Henry on May 11, 2010.

This legislation establishes a uniform set of rules for determining jurisdiction in order to simplify the process of adult guardianship cases and creates a framework that allows state court judges in different states to communicate with each other about adult guardianship cases, said Keili Hicks-McEwen, Oklahoma City regional office director.

“Alzheimer's families have faced unnecessary financial and emotional burdens caused by the need to obtain guardianship in multiple states. Now courts in the state of Oklahoma will be able to communicate more effectively with courts in different states about adult guardianship jurisdiction issues.”

74,000 families in Oklahoma are touched by someone with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. As families travel or tackle the issues of long-distance caregiving, they have encountered difficulties enforcing existing guardianship rights or establishing new ones. This law makes one aspect of Alzheimer’s easier both for the individual with the disease and their family.

“Many thanks go to Gov. Henry, Sen. Ivester and Rep. Dank for supporting and taking the leadership with this bill and moving it through the process,” said Hicks-McEwen.
