News from U.S. Rep. John Sullivan -- Oct. 6, 2009
Seeking common-sense good government: the “Read the Bill” Discharge Petition
Last week, I called for increased transparency in the legislative process by signing a bipartisan discharge petition to H.Res 554. The bill would require the House Majority to give Members of Congress, and the American public, 72 hours to review legislation before it is brought up for a vote in the House of Representatives. I am a proud cosponsor of H.Res. 554. because the bill is just common-sense good government.

It’s unfortunate that Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat leadership continue crafting costly, thousand page bills behind closed doors and behind the backs of the American people. Many times they don’t even allow members of Congress adequate time to fully read the legislation prior to a rushed vote on the House floor. I believe the American people deserve better. I signed this discharged petition, which will require all bills to be posted online for at least 72 hours before it is brought up for a vote in the House of Representatives, because I believe it is a vital first step towards bringing the accountability and transparency in government that the American people deserve.

Sullivan Cosponsors Bill to Cut All Federal Funding for ACORN
Late last month, I issued the following statement announcing my cosponsorship of H.R. 3571, the Defund ACORN Act. This legislation, introduced by House Republican Leader John Boehner, would terminate all federal funding to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) and its affiliates.

“Like many Americans, I am furious about the recent reports of corruption and potential criminal activity by the left wing activist, and taxpayer funded, group ACORN. This simply confirms what I have suspected all along, that ACORN is nothing more than a slush fund of taxpayer dollars used to promote voter fraud, corruption and criminal activity – in this case allegedly advising pimps and prostitutes on how they can break federal laws to run their criminal enterprises and obtain housing assistance. The American people deserve better. I will continue fighting to ensure that ACORN, or any other organization that uses taxpayer dollars to break the law, does not receive another dime from the American people.”

“President Obama has the tools at his disposal to end all funding for ACORN right now. It is obvious this organization is unable or unwilling to use federal funds in a transparent and legal manner. I call on him to publicly disclose and terminate all taxpayer funding of ACORN. American tax dollars must be protected.”

Sunsetting the Czars
Like many of you, I am concerned about the ever increasing number of czars appointed by President Obama’s Administration. Currently, at least 34 Czars work for the Obama Administration with an average salary of $172,000 per year. The broad power entrusted to these individuals, many of which are not subject to Congressional oversight, poses a threat to our government’s system of checks and balances.

Because I believe that those who are making high level policy decisions on behalf of the American people should be held accountable by the American people, I am a cosponsor of three bills that would eliminate, or at least help legitimize, the operation of these “task forces.”

I am a proud cosponsor of H. Con. Res. 185, to encourage the President to issue a report clearly outlining the responsibilities, qualifications, and authorities of his czars and to certify to Congress that his czars will not assert powers other than those granted by statute to a commissioned officer on the President's staff.

In addition, I cosponsored H.R.3569, the Sunset All Czars Act which would prohibit any of your tax dollars from being used to pay salaries or expenses of any task force, council, or similar office established by the President, if the head of such entity is a Czar. The bill also requires that by December 31, 2009, any Czar who is not appointed by a former President or the incumbent President, with the Senate's approval, be removed from his or her position.

Finally, I cosponsored H.R. 3226, the Czar Accountability and Reform (CZAR) Act of 2009introduced by Congressman Jack Kingston. This legislation would also require any additional czar appointments to be confirmed by the United States Senate before any of your tax dollars are used to fund one of these unconstitutional task forces.

Hello!

Mollie and I are participating in the LIVESTRONG Challenge in Austin later this month. As you may know, this is an event aimed to raise awareness and research funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. "At the Lance Armstrong Foundation, we unite people to fight cancer believing that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything." Mollie will participate in the 5K run and I will participate in the 45 mile bicycle ride. We will join other TU folks under TeamMBA.

We both have family members who have battled cancer. My dad has fought leukemia twice and it is now in remission! Mollie's grandma & aunt have both conquered Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and are doing very well today! All that to say, we feel a tie to this cause and are asking for your support.
