Former Collinsville softball all-stater Linsey Curtis was recently presented a $1,200 scholarship in memory of Kayla Burchett, a former Collinsville student who excelled in a number of activities including softball and cheerleading.

Curtis, who helped lead the Lady Cardinals to the state tournament last season, will be a part of the Rogers State University Hillcats this coming season. She was selected as the recipient of the Burchett Scholarship because of her involvement in softball and due to the fact that she will continue that interest in college.

Burchett was one of the victims in a triple homicide in Owasso several years ago. She was a student at Collinsville schools at the time of her death. Kayla's mother was also killed in that incident.

Kayla's grandmother, Brenda Smalygo along with Rick Norris, President of the Collinsville Girls' Softball Association, began organizing a yearly softball tournament honoring Kayla. The monies raised at that tournament are used to fund the scholarship.

Abby Miller and Emilee Richardson were the recipients of the scholarship last year.

Collinsville All-State softball player Linsey Curtis is presented the Kayla Burchett Memorial Scholarship recently by Kayla's grandmother, Brenda Smalygo. Joining Linsey and Brenda at the presentation made at Mazzio's are Linsey's brother, Kendall, left, and her mom and dad, Regina and Robert, right.
