Human Powered Mowing
Early this summer, faced with a yard in need of mowing but two non-functional mowers (1 gas and 1 electric), I began exploring options. With high gas prices I was leaning towards an electric mower. I checked with Cribbet's first and they would have to order one, so I started checking online and stumbled across human powered push mowers. I didn't even know they were still made or used, having used one briefly as a small kid before we 'modernized'. The environmentally friendly push mowers are apparently making a come back. The internet research stressed (and I have confirmed) that they won't work for everyone. If you have a large yard, have tall weeds, or don't like to sweat, I wouldn't recommend giving up the powered mowers. But I have given it a try this summer and survived. I take frequent breaks (to avoid heart attack) and the areas with tall weeds still require touch up with an electric weed trimmer so I'm not entirely "green". Pulling the cat in the wagon is optional if you need additional exercise after mowing. -- Ted Wright (9/2/2008)
I have my parent's old push mower on display at the Newspaper Museum. The basic design has not changed but the newer models claim to be more efficient and light weight.

Komen Race for the Cure
Ted, This is Renee' Oslin Smith, a 1977 graduate of Collinsville High School ( I've lived here my entire life) I was diagnoised with breast cancer in Feb 08. I underwent a lumpectomy, chemo and now radiation (have 23 more treatments). A dear friend of mine (also a c'ville graduate) Linda Swartz Kaled has formed a team for me in the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure which will be held Sept. 20 at the City Plex Towers in Tulsa. This race raises much needed money for breast cancer research. You can go to the website at www.komenrace.com click on Friends for Renee' and join our team or make a donation. By the way, I'm doing great!! We were wondering if you could put a plug in for the walk? Thanks for all you do for our community. Renee' Smith
Burglary Alert
Ted, you might put a bug in everyone's ear and let them know that houses are being hit and burglarized in our C'ville area, to be on the look out for anything that might seem strange when they drive by anyone's houses. My house was hit Friday between 8:15am to 12:45pm. The patio door was busted open and all mattresses were upset and things stolen. I just recently found out that my sister's rent house was also hit the same morning just around the corner a mile from here, somewhere between 6:00am to 3:30 pm. Everyone should be watching out for their neighbor's houses. The sheriff said mine was the 3rd one that day.

Home Football Game Parking

I wanted to remind everyone that all fans who attend our home football games need to remain in the bleachers. We are parking more cars inside of the stadium and therefore do not want people in the parking areas. Fans should cheer our team on to victory from the stands!
GO CARDS! -- CHS Principal Cory Slagle (9/2/2008)

-- Ted Note: Most season ticket holders had typically parked in the north lot before, but the new field turf drainage has modified that area (which will still be used for parking) and additional parking spaces have been created behind the home bleachers. Cory mentioned to me that the students have done a great job staying in the stands the past few years but it has become even more important with the increased traffic starting this season.
