Remedy Selected
DEQ Moves One Step Closer
To Smelter Site Cleanup

In a letter received Dec.17th, 2008 the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has announced the "selected remedy" to address contamination at the former Collinsville smelter site (known as the Tulsa Fuel & Manufacturing Superfund Site).

The remedy includes on-site consolidation and capping of approximately 164,000 cubic yards of on-site soil and waste, approximately 33,000 cubic yards of on-site sediment, and approximately 1,600 cubic yards of off-site soil, sediment and waste. The remedy will also include "institutional controls" that will help to insure the appropriate reuse of the site.

This remedy was the likely outcome based on previous public meeting in July 2008. The next step (in this multi-year process that began in 1994) is the "Remedial Design". The contamination from the 1911-1920s smelter operations includes arsenic, cadmium, lead, and zinc. The ~200,000 cubic yards of smelter waste includes broken retorts and condensers, slag, building debris, ash and brick. The July 2008 estimated cost of the cleanup was over $6.8 million
