It appears that most communities affected by the recent ice storm now have drinking water. Some public water systems continue to rely on generators for their power source but hope to have their regular power supply restored in the near future. For nearly two weeks many systems had been running on generators or at reduced capacity. Through a joint effort between the Department of Environmental Quality, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, community leaders, and several other agencies, DEQ was able to develop a list of those areas hit hard by the winter blast. That process allowed DEQ staff to provide technical assistance to those areas.

The water and wastewater related impacts the storm had on Oklahoma emphasized the need for communities to have generators on hand to provide a reliable standby power source. DEQ is available to answer any questions about further preparing for weather disasters such as this one.

It also is important for communities to keep good records on storm-related problems. That will allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency to accurately assess the situation and determine if the affected area is eligible for reimbursement.

Being responsive to citizens is a priority for DEQ. Please encourage people who have questions on environmental issues to contact our local offices for assistance or access our website at www.deq.state.ok.us .

Ted, I thought you may want to post this on your website. Even though we didn’t have much damage, some may be interested in calling DEQ with questions.

Thank you,

Pam, Thanks for the info ... The obvious question it brings to me is: does Collinsville have generators available for backup power for the water system if we ever had a need? -- Ted
============
Ted, We do not have a generator for the water plant at this moment. Staff is checking on the size we would need to run the plant and the cost. We would actually need two, one for the water plant and one for the wastewater plant. We do have generators for the fire/ems center and the police dept. -- Pam (1/29/2007)
