Ice Storm Recovery
Oklahomans have faced incredible adversity these last two weeks and I am pushing hard to get Oklahomans the help they need from the federal level. After leading the Oklahoma Congressional Delegation’s response to the ice storm, on Tuesday afternoon I called Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator David Paulison to check on the progress of obtaining much needed assistance for the First District. Administrator Paulison let me know that Governor Henry’s major disaster declaration request had been approved by President Bush. This declaration provides assistance to seven counties: Tulsa, Wagoner, Cleveland, Lincoln, Mayes, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie. Additional counties could be added in the future if the Governor requests additional assistance. I thank President Bush for his swift action on approving this, and previous, declarations related to these devastating ice storms. One of my top priorities during this difficult time has been to ensure that FEMA saw first hand how bad the damage was in our community. I personally drove a FEMA representative around the First District to tour the damage. I will continue fighting to ensure that we get all the necessary resources to help our citizens recover.

My staff and I are committed to helping everyone in the First District return to as normal of a life as possible, as quickly as possible. Please continue to check my website, http://sullivan.house.gov, for up-to-date information on power outages, debris removal, shelter information and other important storm related topics. In addition, if you have storm damage, it is important that you report this damage to the State Disaster Assistance Hotline at 1-866-560-7584. By reporting these damages, you will help the state make a case for additional assistance. The hotline is available daily from 7:00am to 7:00pm. I know that often the number is busy, but I encourage you to keep trying.

Funding the Government in a Fiscally Irresponsible Manner
When Democrats took over as the majority party in the House, they vowed to pass each of the 12 appropriations bills that fund the federal government’s programs individually. Unfortunately, their end product, a massive omnibus spending bill, reeks of fiscal irresponsibility marred with excessive spending. I voted against this legislation because it is roughly $24.3 billion over the President’s request for domestic spending - $24.3 billion which American families are going to have to make up for out of their pocketbooks. One of Congress’s most basic Constitutional roles is to fund the federal government. This omnibus legislation is yet another example of the Democrat majority’s inability to even do that in a fiscally responsible manner. On the surface, the bill looks as though it adheres to President Bush’s $932 billion cap on discretionary spending. However, just below the surface, the bill is overloaded with enough gimmicks that total discretionary spending is pushed to a bloated level that will surely affect each and every taxpayer for years to come.

Alternative way to report your ice storm damage: www.ok.gov/OEM
Report all losses and let the experts make the determination. Some examples are lost time at work, food losses, generators, house and vehicle damage, contractor's fees, and any other personal losses. Please make the call to (866) 560-7584 The Oklahoma Damage Assessment Hotline for FEMA. Every resident needs to call this number and report all damages. Keep all receipts of expenses, take photos, and keep an itemized list of all out-of-pocket expenses. The line may be busy for some time but keep trying until you get through, It is imperative to make the call as these numbers will decide individual qualification assistance from FEMA.
