Cardinals Fall in Regionals

Good defense and timely hitting had been two of the Cardinals biggest assets all season long, but in the most crucial time of the season, neither of those assets could be found as the Cardinals bowed out of post season play by losing to Broken Bow and Poteau. Due to wet grounds, the regional tournament that was scheduled to be played in Sallisaw, was played in Poteau at Poteau High School and Carl Albert State College.

The Cardinals started tournament play on Friday by defeating the Sallisaw Black Diamonds by a score of 7 to 0. Collinsville jumped out to an early two to nothing lead when they scored twice in the top of the first inning. Josh Walker reached first on a Black Diamond error and David Chester followed with his 17th home run of the year. In the second inning the Cards scored a run when Tyler Nair's ground out scored Ryan Coe who had reach base with a walk. The Cardinals were unable to score in the third and fourth innings, but tallied two runs in the fifth. Jonathan Bewely opened the inning with a single and later scored when Chester connected with his second home run of the game to put the Cardinals up by a score of 5 to 0. In the sixth inning the Cardinals scored once when Coe connected for his 6th home run of the year. The seventh inning saw the Cards scoring once. Chester led off the inning with a single. Both Brad Aguillard and Ryan Coe were hit by pitches to load the bases. Pinch hitter Alex Belitz then lifted a fly ball to right field that scored the Cardinals final run of the game.

Starting pitcher Josh Walker and reliever Alex Belitz combined to keep the Black Diamonds off the scoreboard. Walker was the winning pitcher as he pitched five strong innings allowing four hits, walking one and striking out three. Belitz closed out the game by also pitching two strong innings allowing no hits and striking out three.

In the second game of the tournament the Cardinals drew Broken Bow and were defeated by a score of 9 to 3. The Cardinals committed six errors which allowed all nine Broken Bow runs to be unearned, as Broken Bow scored five times in the third inning and four times in the sixth inning. The Cardinals scored two of their three runs in the third inning to close Broken Bow's lead to three runs. Josh Walker led off the inning with his 11th home run of the year. David Chester drew a base on balls and Kevin Phillips lined a single to put runners at the corners. Brad Aguillard reached first on an error that allowed Chester to score. In the sixth inning the Cardinals scored one run. Brad Aguillard lined a one out double and Ryan Coe and Matt Sowards drew consecutive walks to load the bases to load the bases. Pinch hitter Alex Belitz also drew a walk to force home the final Cardinal run.

Kevin Phillips started on the mound and was the victim of five of the Cardinal six errors. Phillips pitched five strong innings, did not allow an earned run, walked none and allowed only one hit while striking out six. Both Jonathan Bewely and Kyle Keith pitched one inning each with Keith striking out two.

The playing venue switch to Carl Albert State College on Saturday as Collinsville was defeated by the Poteau Pirates by a score of 5 to 4 in extra innings. The Cardinals jumped out to a three to nothing in the top of the first inning when Kevin Phillips slammed his 5th home run of the year. A Jonathan Bewely single and a walk to Josh Walker set the stage for Phillips's three run home run. The Pirates countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 3 to 2 Collinsville after one inning of play. The Cardinals scored one run in the third inning to take a 4 to 2 lead. Walker lashed a one out single, David Chester was hit by a pitch and Kevin Phillips doubled Walker home for his fourth run batted in of the game. Not only was this the final run the Cardinals would collect in the game they only managed one hit the rest of the game. The Pirates scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a leadoff double, a sacrifice and a squeeze bunt.

Jeremy Guest started on the mound for the Cardinals and was relieved by Alex Belitz. Belitz was able to pitch out of a no outs bases loaded jam in the first inning and pitched a strong three plus innings allowing one earned run while striking out two. Belitz was relieved by Kyle Keith who was very effective for one and two thirds innings striking out four and allowing no runs. Josh Walker pitched a strong final three innings and struck out four and allowed one run.

The Cardinals finished the season with 30 wins and 7 losses. They captured first place in the Pryor and District tournaments and finished third in the East/West Classic Tournament in Deer Creek.
