Oct. 7, 2004 Possible Illegal Sewer Dumping in 2002 |
Press Release -- Collinsville, OK October 6, 2004:
City Seeks Community
Help on
Possible Illegal Sewer Dumping
The City of Collinsville Municipal Authority is asking the citizens of Collinsville
to help identify possible illegal dumping of materials into the city's sanitary
sewer system. An unknown substance was received at the Wastewater Treatment
Plant in October or November 2002 that caused an upset of the operations.
This upset resulted in the allowable Biochemical Oxygen Demand in the plant
discharge to be above acceptable limits. No other incident has happened since
that time. The upset caused the city to be in violation of its operating permit
with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and is currently under
a consent order to correct the problem that caused the violation.
The location of possible illegal dumping to the sewer system and identification
of the material dumped stills remains undetermined. The city feels certain
that the incident was probably caused as a result of dumping by a seasonal-type
business that needed to empty a tank (such as a lawn treatment chemical, herbicide
or pesticide).
The public is asked to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity. You
are asked to report if a tank truck is observed near manholes or any unusual
connection to the public sanitary sewer system. In addition, homeowners should
only dispose of organic materials in their sewer system.
If you observe suspicious activity, please contact the Collinsville Police
Department, 371-1000.
